Snack packaging is a volume game with thin margins, which makes the structural and material decisions unusually consequential. A carton that fails on a grocery shelf, or that lets product go stale early, costs more than the packaging saved. Packadex builds custom snack boxes for chips, bars, nuts, popcorn, and dry goods.

Barrier Choices for Oily and Dry Snacks Fried and oily snacks need a grease barrier or the carton stains from the inside out. Nuts and popcorn need a moisture barrier to protect texture. Dry goods like crackers and pretzels often need neither, and paying for a barrier you do not need is a straightforward waste on a high-volume SKU.

We will spec the barrier to the product rather than applying one by default. If your snack is packed in an inner film pouch, the carton is doing presentation and stacking work only, and can be plain board.

Retail-Ready and Shelf-Ready Cases Grocery buyers increasingly expect shelf-ready packaging: a case that opens into a display tray without unpacking individual units. This affects the case design, the perforation lines, and how the units are oriented inside.

If you are selling into grocery, ask the buyer for their shelf-ready specification before we proof, because retailers publish detailed requirements on case dimensions and facings, and retrofitting an existing carton to meet them is more expensive than designing to them from the start.

Multi-Count Bar Cartons Protein, granola, and energy bar cartons are usually multi-count with a tear-open top that converts to a display tray. The tear line needs to open cleanly without tearing into the branding, which is a die-cut and board-grain question we resolve at proof stage.

Sustainability Without the Greenwash Recycled-content and FSC-certified boards are widely available for snack packaging and add little cost at volume. Compostable is harder: most compostable barrier coatings require industrial composting that few consumers have access to, so a recyclable carton is often the more honest and more useful claim.
